Raliegh Friday Night Review (by Lincoln C)

What a beautiful weekend! Yea, it was cloudy, raining at times, but
soon as panic stepped on the stage both nights, the rain stopped and
the jamming commenced. My old sponsor/the best friend I have in the
world came down from New York for the weekend to experience his first
panic shows and his first experience with the soberfans and he was
not disappointed by either!

Here's my Friday 4/26 review:

Walking into Walnut Creek on Friday was miserable. It was pouring,
and I mean POURING, rain. I was completely soaked when I finally
found Courbin holding down the fort at the table. We were hooked up
with a nice table placement at Raleigh. They set us up right
outside/inside a radio station booth that was not being usedsoon to
be renamed the sober shack. It was not far from the stage on
School's side, so even if you were at the table you could still enjoy
the music.

Panic kicked off Friday's show with a nice Thin Air and then blasted
off into space with a kicking Pigeons and then into Send Your Mind.
The boys had come to lay it down and they did just that with a
very "jammy" Low Rider that just seem to go on forever. Although,
I'm not a big Low Rider fan, this one had me dancin' out of my Teva's
for almost 20 minutes. Then came one of my soberfan anthems, I'm Not
Alone. Damn, I love this song and as always I was glad that some
sober cats were near. Panic closed out the first set dirty and
raunchy with Sleeping Man and ILS.

It was a solid first set and the boys seem to be gelling and having a
lot of fun up there. I actually can't remember seeing them smile so
much and positively interact the way they did this past weekend.

We had about 10 people for the meeting at set break inside our little
sober shack with its dimmed lights and slow moving fan that moved the
air and the smiles around the little carpeted shack. The gratitude
and the lightheadedness I was experiencing from the release of
tension that a Panic show brings me was oozing from my pores. I felt
so blessed to be sitting there with fellow sober freaks, to be at a
show, to be dancing with sober sweat kissing the ground as I'm
smiling a smile the size of Alaska and thanking a God for the Gift of
acceptance and life. Damn I am lucky!! DAMN WE ARE LUCKY!

They opened up the second set with drums, which was strange and in my
opinion left the second set a little off balance. Not that the
second set wasn't a treat, the drums placement just threw me
off..change and me..we go back and forth all the time. Of course,
I'll take the drums 2nd set opener if they will follow it with a
Disco every time. The Radio Child>Jam>Tall Boy was rockin and left
my muscles and bones screaming for me to stop dancing. Although my
muscles got a brief rest during Tortured Artist, they would not get
another rest for the remainder of the show. North>BWM>Jam>Fishwater
and then Cilly H20 to close out the 2nd set and then City of Beans
for the encores. I should also mention that Jojo and Schools were
sporting "Fuck Jerry Joseph" shirts during the 2nd set. I don't know
if someone was selling them in the lot or not, but they were
defiantly made as a response to JJ comments on the war in Iraq.
Apparently, JoJo and Schools couldn't help themselves by bringing
some humor to the whole thing.

It was a wonderful night for an evening. The only low points for me
was the Chilly, which seem to be lacking the punch, but besides that
it was a very solid show.

I will let someone else have the honors of reviewing Saturday's show
as I spent most of Saturday evening dancing and enjoying the show
from the table.

Chicago review (by Jimmy D)

hey everybody! just got back from chitown and already miss it! i'll
start with the set list and give a quick review after each.
04-11-03
I. arleen> climb to safety, makes sense, notalone, some new song,
stop&go, pilgrims, all time low
II. porch> fishwater, don't wanna lose you, pidgeons> drums>
imitation> barstools
E. down, papa legi thought the song selection was great but it seemed
to me to be one of those nights that the boys were not into it.
George seemed to be struggling. thanks to Jeff & Mike for working the
tables. Seven of us at the meeting and we all stayed sober. i am
terrible with names, i'm not even sure if i got Mikes name right, but
i really enjoyed meeting everyone and really appreciate you all being
there.
alright! second night, and any reservations i had after the less than
stellar performance from the previous show were quickly laid to rest.
I. disco>greta>jam> north, blue indian, blackout> blight> radio
child> action man
II. drums> feels like Mississippi, jack> * spoonfull> jam> red hot
mama> jam> papas home> drums> papas home, aint life grand
E. drivin> heaven> drivin
the boys were much tighter and George was sick! Colonel Bruce came
out for spoonfull. there was alot more improvisation and deep jams.
there were a few times when the boys were all playing together with
their backs to the crowd. Schools came over to jam with george and
they were smokin! these were the boys i saw in atlanta. George really
blew me away on a few tunes. Thanks to Tim D. for working the table.
There was quite a bit of drugging going on around me( more than usual
at a show) i left my seat and went to hang out with Tim. You are a
lifesaver man! Thanks again to everyone i met both nights. I hope to
see you all again real soon. Go cubs!!

Boston report (by Flarcus)

Howdy all, its your friendly traveller checking in having arrived home from
Boston.

Well, first a splendid time was had.

Thanks again to Shaw for making our lives easier, the tub was out and
waiting, and he had, as usual, scouted us out the best spot he could find.

Sparse sober crowd the first night, just 3 at the meeting, and impossible to
hear, noisy drunk crowd milling about in the lobby. This was one of those
nights, maybe it was just where my head was at, that made me say im not
travelling so dadgum far for this...the only spot for the table was in an
echoey place where people stood to finish their beers (no beer in the
seating area), and they just stood there talking and drinking during most
of the show. Seemed like many of them cared more about the buzz then the
music. Been there, done that.

Slow start to the night, avis, tall boy, then they picked it up with cream
puff war, proving-me and the devil-proving a new song papa johnny road
followed, nicly done (let me say here the the new album is great, terrific
feel and color to the music, good songs and well played and recorded...buy
it) a soso (imho) wrangler and dyin man ended the set

set 2 began with thousage, nice and crunchy, just the way a crispy ssausage
should be, into travelling light christmas followed with a nice jam and the
watching the sleeping man (tasty) and dthen rebirtha took us into a very
short drums...things began to move then, with a long trippy hatfield, george
sang dorathea, which i like more and more, and then boom, a bouncy bouncy
walk on (some get stoned others get strange, sooner or later it all gets
real...amen), then tie your shoes ->conrad to end the set...post drume def
the highlight for me...encore counting train cars (another new song, liked
it too) and then chiillychilllyyyywater (which we thought the would save for
the second night)

pretty good night all said

next day i went to the treatment center where i got sober and told my story
to the group there, very very grateful and happy to be there and still sober
5 + years later...staff happy too, tough job they have, not much success

had a killer italian meal in the north end, then to the show, acoustic sound
check...hmmmm

yup, fiirst set all acoustic...this was a night where i knew that all the
travelling paid off, what a treat they had in store for us. opened with
wondering ripped it up into fishing a sweet new song, then ophelia (i had an
old frriend there who turned me on to the Band and the Dead, it was his
first panic show and they converted him on the spot)..clinic cynic, a
personal favorite followed, then a soulful nobody's loss into a long trippy
pickin up the pieces...trouble followed, they had sound checked it and
there was a buy whou could barely walk standing by the table, and i called
it out and sung a little on the first tuning note,he was no way, and he face
lit up and he did a nice 3 legged (cane) dance with me when they broke it
out... cbrown, and cant find my way home (the first since mikeys last show)
closed out a tasty acpustic treat...jb at one point said this sittin down
thing is all right...and schools (standing on the upright bass) said shucks.

great meeting, crowd much cooler and quieter, a better vibe all around (or
maybe it was just me) (its always me dammit)...3 relative newcomers joined
brett m, brad r and mice elf, and we had a gratitude meeting

any thought that the boys might rest on the laurels was dispelled as the
second set started with diner into henry parsons...heat and more heat then
tortured artist, one of my faves from ball (buy it), old neighborhood and
bears gone fishin (not my #1 wsp tune by far, but a huge tasty jam closed it
out into a full drums...then worry, with george continuing to impress, he
was great, then the eerie new song dont want to lose you (from ball, run
right out now and get 2 copies, panic bomb a friend) into long jam which
buitl and built into love tractor to close the set...whew

ok encores, prolly a slow one then a standard, right? wrong!!! a huge
rippin anthemic surprise valley roared out washing us up to and off the
roof....then a slow closer, for sure, to say good night, but no, without a
pause they segued into no sugar/new mother nature, songs i have been chasing
so long i forgot i was chasing them...i got the rare but wonderful sober
head rush to end my night

a few simple observations...first my spiritual condition has everthing to
do with the joy i receive,
second, the table service opportunity is a great blessing, i am very glad to
be part of us,
and third...go see widespread panic...buy the new album....sign up for
service, and dance dance dance

thanks again, i look forward to seeing many of you at savannah and
tallahassee
